365 Movies Day #43 "Wide Awake"
Wow, couldn't even find the trailer on line for this one. Flash back to the year before Shyamalan became a household name for "Sixth Sense" and you'll find "Wide Awake". If you looked at the DVD cover in the store, you probably passed it by as a quirky dumb family comedy starring Rosie O'Donnell. In fact, it's a beautiful story about a boy who's beloved grandfather passes. Heartbroken, the little boy goes on a quest to find out if God is real and if his grandpa made it to heaven.
This film deals with some serious issues. It's cute, it's touching and it's nothing like the cover of the DVD. Starring Dennis Leary (in a surprisingly non-Leary role as the boy's father), Dana Delany (who I still remember having a crush on when she was on "China Beach"), Robert Loggia, Julia Stiles and finally Joseph Cross as the story's protagonist. It's not the Shyamalan you've come to love/hate. Check it out.
